"Truly one of a kind sound. Shades of Tegan and Sara (love them) in the vocals and the doubling- LOVE IT. Fearless writing here. Well done.
Has 80's overtones too. This is great little track. Unusually cool Vocal.
Solid in both melody and lyrics. Lyrics are innovative. The vibrato in your voice- which is truly unique- is crazy bold. If you continue to stay on this path and extrapolate in future you will see the light."

Emerging from the mountain town of Nelson, British Columbia, Vague Notion creates Post punk indietronica that balances story telling, groove, and moments of radiant uplift. Since forming in 2013, the duo has steadily developed a sound that merges cinematic electronic textures with expressive guitar work and inimitable vocals, crafting songs that feel both intimate and expansive.
At the center of the project is the voice of Cheryl Janzen, whose vocal style has drawn comparisons to Chrissie Hynde—cool, direct, and emotionally grounded, capable of shifting from restrained introspection to quietly powerful intensity. Her delivery anchors the duo’s atmospheric arrangements, giving the music a human center within its layered electronic landscape.
Alongside Janzen, Bevan Early brings his very signature approach to electric guitar. His playing draws influence from South and West African guitar traditions such as Salif Keita and Kandabongo Man to weave rhythmic patterns and melodic lines that add movement and texture to the band’s synth-driven sound. The interplay between Janzen’s vocals and Early’s guitar creates a distinctive sonic balance, where electronic atmosphere and organic musicianship coexist seamlessly.
Vague Notion’s music draws from elements of indietronica, synthpop, rock, and jazz, shaping songs that emphasize mood, texture, and emotional momentum. Their compositions often unfold unexpectedly, allowing tension and release to guide and surprise the listener through adventurous sonic spaces that you'll want to stay in.
The project has also gained international recognition across independent radio. Their track “Base Sick” was professionally adjudicated by Juno Award–winning and Grammy-nominated musician Michael Hanson of Glass Tiger, who offered high praise for the duo’s sound and songwriting. The release also reached #5 on Banks Radio Australia, helping introduce the project to international audiences.
More recent releases have continued building momentum abroad. The track “Peace Dub” reached #4 on both Valley FM and Phoenix FM in Jan 2026, while their track “Visceral Reaction” also climbed to #4 on Phoenix FM in the UK Mar 2026, reinforcing the duo’s growing presence across the global indie radio landscape.
Their latest EP, GLOW, reflects an evolution toward a broader emotional palette. While maintaining the atmospheric depth and novelty that defines their sound, the release introduces brighter melodic energy and a sense of forward motion. The songs move between introspection and uplift, revealing a project equally comfortable exploring shadow and light.
Working independently from the rugged landscapes of British Columbia, Vague Notion continues to shape a sound that feels cinematic, emotionally resonant, and quietly distinctive—music that invites listeners into an atmosphere where melody, groove, and human connection meet and they like each other....a lot.

Visceral Reaction is #4 at Phoenix FM in the UK! We're celebrating!
